German club VfL Wolfsburg has signed a lucrative 9 year kit deal with Nike set to start this summer and will run till 2024-25 season. It is the biggest kit deal in clubs history and second only to Bayern Munich in German Bundesliga. Wolfsburg’s previous 2 year deal with Kappa ended this season and Nike secured one of the most promising teams in Europe who reached quarterfinal of the champions League this season.
Nike will be paying €8m a season for next 9 years to be Wolfsburg’s kit suppliers and Wolfsburg also negotiated several performance related bonuses which include qualifying for the champions league will added another 20% percent to the yearly payment.
CONTRACT PERIOD | TOTAL | YEARLY |
2016 to 2025 | €72 million (Guaranteed over next 9 years) | €8 million/per season |
Nike will be producing Wolfsburg kits starting with 2016-17 season and they have already announced this year’s kit released date which is 4th July 2016. Wolfsburg seem to be delighted with the new deal as it is not only the biggest in clubs history but also the second most lucrative kit deal behind Germany champions Bayern Munich who has a Adidas deal worth £42.5 million a year.
Premier League clubs usually negotiate far more lucrative deals compared to other european leagues but this Wolfsburg kit deal is a good sign for German football as Nike are prepared to splash the cash on a team who failed to qualify for the Champions League next season. Manchester United’s £75 million a year deal with Adidas is by far the biggest in football and sports brands like Nike, Adidas, Puma etc usually prepare to pay more for established & historic clubs rather than second fiddle teams in top european leagues.
Wolfsburg’s first Nike kit will be officially released on 4th July while two more Away and third (alternative) kits will be unveiled before the Germany Bundesliga season gets underway.
